If You Need Help

There are a variety of resources on and off campus to help survivors of sexual assault and those who care about them. Many students find it helpful to contact one of the Advocates, as they can provide confidential assistance and help answer questions you may have about the other resources and options available.

If you have been sexually assaulted, it is very important to consider seeking medical attention. Specially trained nurses can treat any injuries that you may have, take steps to prevent pregnancy and STDs (within 72 hours of an incident), and help to preserve your rights and options for any decisions that you may choose to make at a later time (within 96 hours of an incident).

DO:

  • Find a safe place.
  • Call or find someone whom you can trust to listen.
  • Consider calling an Advocate soon, as they can help you decide what to do next.
  • Strongly consider seeking immediate medical attention. If you do decide to go to the hospital for a forensic exam, do not bathe, go to the bathroom, or brush your teeth. Store any clothing that you were wearing at the time in a paper bag.  This type of exam can be conducted up to 96 hours following an incident.

REMEMBER:

  • It was not your fault.
  • You have control over all decisions regarding your healing process.
  • Sexual assault can affect many aspects of your life and healing will take time.
  • There are people who are here to help you.
