Programs & Residencies

Listed below are the series and programs of the Stadler Center for Poetry. Please click on the program name for more information and application instructions, if relevant. Please note that the Poet-in-Residence program, the Sojka Visiting Poet Series, and the Stadler Center Writers Series are by invitation only; we do not accept applications for these programs, nor can we respond to queries.

  • Annual Student Poetry Reading
    The Annual Student Poetry Reading, held in April every year, features the winners of the Cadigan Prizes for Younger Writers as well as the winners of the Julia Fonville Smithson Memorial Prize.
  • Student Literary Prizes

    Each year the Cadigan Prizes for Younger Writers and the Julia Fonville Smithson Memorial Prize award Bucknell undergraduates for extraordinary poetry and prose.

  • Undergraduate Internship
    The Stadler Center Internship (for Bucknell undergraduates) offers hands-on experience in arts administration for students who may wish to pursue a career in the field. Interns work closely with Stadler Center staff to develop and administer the Center's events and programs, and may pursue opportunities for literary outreach work in the community. Interns receive one course credit for successful completion of the semester-length program, which is offered each fall and spring semester. Bucknell sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible.
  • Griot-Stadler Prize for Poetry

    The Griot-Stadler Prize for Poetry is awarded for an unpublished poetry manuscript by a black US poet who has previously published at least one book of poetry.

  • Poet-in-Residence
    Since its initiation in 1981, the Poet-in-Residence program has brought a writer of national or international renown to spend a semester at Bucknell University each spring semester. The program is intended to honor the achievements of an accomplished poet, providing him or her with the opportunity to work with limited academic obligations.
  • Roth Residence in Creative Writing
    Named for the Pulitzer Prize-winning Bucknell graduate and established in the fall of 1993, the Roth Residence offers an emerging writer four months of unfettered writing time during Bucknell's fall semester, without formal academic obligations.
  • Seminar for Younger Poets
    The Seminar for Younger Poets, one of the Center's longest running programs, provides an extended opportunity for undergraduate poets from universities across the country to write and to be guided by established poets. Based on the model of professional artists’ colonies, the Seminar is held for three weeks each June.
  • Sojka Visiting Poet Series
    The Sojka Series brings a distinguished poet to Bucknell for a two-day visit each fall. In addition to presenting a reading, the Sojka poet meets in an informal venue with students and other members of the Bucknell community.
  • Stadler Fellowship
    Initiated in 1998, the Stadler Fellowships offer a recent MFA, MA, or PhD graduate in poetry the opportunity to receive professional training in arts administration and literary editing along with time to complete a first manuscript of poems.
