Program for Arts Merit Finalists

Arts Merit Scholarship On-Campus Program

Departments, with the Office of Admissions, will host an on-campus weekend event for scholarship finalists on Friday and Saturday, January 27 and 28, 2012. A welcome reception and dinner kicks-off the program Friday evening, and the on-campus activities run throughout Saturday.

Special note to music major candidates: the Department of Music offers an alternate audition day on Saturday, February 11, 2012 (with a snow date of Saturday, February 18, 2012) for those who are invited but unable to attend the January weekend.

Note to music major candidates who are invited to audition and who require an a accompanist: The Department of Music must receive sheet music no later than two weeks prior to candidates’ audition dates.

Registering for the Weekend

Invitations to register for on-campus programs are sent on a rolling basis to students who pass the prescreening evaluation.  The Office of Admissions notifies all candidates within two weeks of the on-campus program date for the arts area to which they have applied, provided that students have submitted the requisite credentials by the deadlines posted.

Art and Art History

  • Studio artists: Present portfolios of 10-15 original works, or slides of original works, to faculty
  • Art historians: Interview with faculty, respond to exhibit pieces in Samek Art Gallery 
  • All: Meet with current students, faculty, and staff at afternoon luncheon

 


Dance

  • Participate in ballet, modern, and jazz workshop audition class
  • Perform two-minute solo in genre of choice
  • Meet with members of Bucknell Dance Company
  • Families: Open Q&A session with department students and faculty

 


English – Creative Writing

  • Attend creative writing workshops led by professors
  • Talk with members of creative writing faculty about craft, creative process, and goals
  • Meet with current merit scholars during lunch
  • Attend Bucknell student reading and StadlerCenter for Poetry reception

 


Music

  • Perform two to three pieces from different historical periods that best represent technical and interpretative skills
  • Personal interview with faculty
  • Complete online audition form on Music Department website
  • Composition candidates: Complete performance audition and submit additional scores of works if available at time of visit

Singers who are selected as finalists and who require an accompanist must have their sheet music into the department no later than two weeks prior to their audition date.

Non-music major candidates
, who are only required to submit their recordings for the arts merit scholarship adjudication process, will not be accommodated for in-person auditions.

 


Theatre

  • Theatre performance: Perform two contrasting monologues (no cuts necessary for time constraints) and participate in movement, voice, and improvisation workshops
  • Design and technology: Present original artwork (drawings, paintings, technical drawings) and production-work via slides or photographs
  • Design and technology: Interview with faculty member
  • Families: Open Q&A session with department students and faculty
