SERV: Student Emergency Response Volunteers
Advisor: Jason Friedberg jdf024@bucknell.edu
Description: SERV provides training, stand-bys, and emergency response to the Bucknell community.
What is SERV?
Comprised of everyday Bucknell students, SERV (Student Emergency Response Volunteers) is a Bucknell student group providing quick response emergency medical treatment to Bucknell faculty, staff and students. In addition, the members also volunteer as EMT's and/or fire fighters with WCEC.
What are you members' qualifications?
All of our personnel who respond to incidents on Bucknell's campus are Pennsylvania certified as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) or First Responders. In addition to their medical training, SERV members have the opportunity to pursue training in a multitude of fields including but not limited to: vehicle rescue, structural fire fighting, rope rescue, confined space rescue, flammable liquid fires, and of course more advanced medical training.
When does SERV respond to campus incidents?
We respond to incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week, whenever an ambulance is dispatched to campus by Union County Communications. Our average response time, from dispatch to arrival on scene, is about one minute.
What equipment do SERV members carry?
EMTs and First Responders respond to medical emergencies with a bag stocked with basic medical emergency equipment and oxygen kits. Several of the EMTs also carry portable radios, which enable them to communicate with Union County Communications, paramedics from Evangelical Hospital, and the incoming ambulance crew.
What else does SERV do?
In addition to responding to all campus medical emergencies, we also provide a free ambulance to standby at campus events. Our most recent events include Bucknell Cycling's bike race, Anchor Splash, Lambda Chi 5k, and the Special Olympics. We also hold a mock vehicle accident every year to educate the hazards of drinking and driving.
