About Bucknell Recycling
Bucknell University is committed to a long term and all-encompassing approach to environmentally responsible operations.
Bucknell University has recycled as far back as most can remember. The University attained success in the 1990’s with recycling rates that exceeded state goals. However, a complacency developed and in early 2000 the recycling rate actually dropped below the 1990 levels. In 2003 Facilities, and the Environmental club took steps to revitalize the program. Residential Life and RHA joined the effort in 2006. The result has been a program in improvement and positive trends.
Each year approximately 1800 tons of garbage is generated by Bucknell University. That’s enough trash to fill Sojka Pavilion in less than 3 years. Much of this solid waste is transported to the Lycoming Landfill at a cost of $45/ton.

Last year Bucknell University recycled approximately 340 tons of materials, but that’s only 18% of the waste stream. Based on studies that up to 55% can be recycled, Bucknell University recycles only one third of what is possible.
As one of the country’s top universities, Bucknell University is poised to have one of the country’s top recycling programs. The program must target students, staff, faculty and visitors and must rely on a volunteer/staff mix. Your help and ideas are always appreciated to make the program better.
