Sept. 7, 2009: Letter to Bucknell Students
Dear Students,
The University has now confirmed that several students have tested positive for influenza type A, and based on the best advice of public health authorities we are assuming these cases are novel H1N1 influenza or "swine flu."
The students have been isolated, or will be returning home with their parents. We are communicating with those who have been in close contact with these students to ask them to remain alert for symptoms. If you do not hear from us you can assume that we do not have specific information suggesting these students may have been around you recently.
At this time, there is no vaccine for this flu, which is typically milder than the seasonal flu. BEFORE going to the student health center, students with symptoms of illness - and only students with symptoms of illness - should call the Office of Student Health Services (SHS) at 570-577-1401, or after hours, the Department of Public Safety at 570-577-3333. Calling before visiting SHS will help staff determine if your symptoms make it necessary that you visit SHS and will help ensure that medical staff are available to promptly diagnose those who must be seen in person. By calling before visiting the SHS you will also help diminish any potential transmission of the flu or any other illness to others.
Even if you believe that you may have been exposed to H1N1, if you do not have symptoms of the flu, please do not call or go to the SHS. There is no testing or treatment that is appropriate when no symptoms of the flu are present.
For more information about swine flu, please see the University' special website, www.bucknell.edu/swineflu, including the FAQs.
Sincerely,
Susan Hopp
Dean of Students
