University names renowned neurosurgeon as Commencement speaker
Benjamin Carson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for performing high-risk surgeries. [full story]
Carson, director of pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, co-founder of the Carson Scholars Fund, and recipient of more than 50 honorary doctoral degrees, will deliver the Commencement address during Bucknell's 160th annual graduation ceremony on Sunday, May 23.
Carson has been recognized for his work by Harvard's Center for Public Leadership, U.S. News & World Report, CNN, TIME Magazine, the Library of Congress and the NAACP. Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, a television movie based on Caron's memoir, premiered on TNT in February.
"As a leader in medicine and science and as humanitarian, Dr. Carson has demonstrated qualities that this University and the Bucknell community deeply respect and that we aim to encourage in our students," said Bucknell President Brian C. Mitchell.
Bucknell's Commencement begins at 10 a.m. and will be broadcast live online. Viewers from around the world may watch the ceremony and Carson's address by visiting a special link that will be provided on the University's website in the days leading up to the ceremony.

The fall 2009 semester marks the third year of a dramatic drive to increase the size of the Bucknell faculty. Of the 78 new professors hired since fall 2007, three dozen of them fill new positions created to achieve a five-course load goal for all of Bucknell University's teacher-scholars.
"The whole purpose of the five-course load was to make sure faculty had more time available to work with students," said Provost Mick Smyer. "Increasingly for a number of our students, that means more time for mentoring in research-related capacities or scholarship-related capacities. A hallmark is faculty integrating research or scholarship with student learning."

Bucknell hosts Climate Action Festival
The nationwide effort draws attention to the environmental and social repercussions related to climate change. [full story]
The Climate Action Festival will be held Oct. 14-17 as part of a nationwide effort taking place on America's campuses during October. It's hosted by the Environmental Club and the Bucknell University Environmental Center.
The festival features noted climate scholar Michael Dorsey as its keynote speaker. Dorsey is a professor of environmental sciences at Dartmouth College and principal investigator in Dartmouth's Climate Justice Research Project. He will speak Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Elaine Langone Center Forum.
"We want to educate Bucknell students about climate change, serve as a catalyst for change for individuals to become more environmentally sustainable, and connect with other environmental associations like peer school students and community groups to form an alliance," said Molly Burke '10, president of the Environmental Club.
A documentary screening, a panel discussion and an open house tour and dinner at Bucknell's new Sustainable Cooperative House are also offered during the Climate Action Festival. Click here for a complete list of activities.

Homecoming marks milestones for co-education, Bucknell Brigade
Weekend highlights include the 125 Years of Co-Education celebration and anniversary events for the Bucknell Brigade and the Department of International Relations. [full story]
The University's rich history of co-education will be commemorated with a celebration and symposium during Homecoming Weekend. The Bucknell Brigade will mark 10 years of service with a mural dedication and the Department of International Relations plans a 25th anniversary talk by Jeanne Hey '85 as well as an alumni panel and reception. Homecoming attendees are also invited to explore downtown Lewisburg through the University's new Night on the Town shopping event. All parents, alumni and friends who make a gift of $25 or more by Dec. 14 will receive a complimentary calendar that features beautiful campus photos and historic images. These gifts benefit the Annual Fund, which enhances the Bucknell experience for every student. Those who have given Bucknell $25 or more since July 1, 2008 will automatically receive a calendar.
