Seasonal flu shot available to students Thursday, Oct. 15
Dear Students,
Student Health Services will distribute the seasonal "flu shot" vaccine to students from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15. The shot vaccine being distributed by SHS will be available only to Bucknell students. The cost is $20, which can be paid with BUID, cash or check. To accommodate the distribution of the vaccine, regular SHS services will close at 3 p.m. that day.
The University earlier this month provided a seasonal "flu mist" vaccine. If you have had that vaccination, you do not need to be vaccinated again this year for seasonal flu.
The vaccine being provided Thursday is the inactivated vaccine or "flu shot" that is given by injection. This method of vaccine is recommended for most age groups, including pregnant women, and those with long-term health problems such as asthma, or certain muscle and nerve disorders. More information is available from the CDC at http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vis-flu.pdf.
As a reminder, the seasonal flu and H1N1, or swine flu, are different viruses. It is possible to contract both viruses, and there are separate vaccinations to protect against each type. The University will announce later this month when it will provide the H1N1 vaccine to students.
Please continue to take the necessary precautions to help prevent the spread of flu. More information, including updates on presumed H1N1 cases at Bucknell, is available at www.bucknell.edu/swineflu.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Donald Stechschulte
Director, Student Health Services
