Passage: A Group Experience for Male Students at Bucknell University

Lakota Sioux people believe that older people must assist younger people in their awakening to wisdom. In the Lakota language this time, this awakening to wisdom, is called wacin k' sape (wah-cheenk-sa-pay). Dr. Tom Balistrieri has lived, participated in ceremony with and worked with Lakota people for over twenty years. Based on his experiences with these people, as well as elders and medicine people of Indigenous peoples from around the world, Dr. Balistrieri has created a program called Passage. Passage is a group experience based on initiation practices that focus on assisting young men in awakening to wisdom. Dr. Balistrieri's Passage program has been referenced in text books, published articles and doctoral studies. Over the years dozens of young men have participated in and completed the program.

This Fall and Spring semester, Dr. Balistrieri is offering Passage on the Bucknell campus. The program entails a commitment of two hours a week for the remainder of this semester and all of spring semester.  You must have a willingness to look deeply into yourself as well as a willingness to understand your place in the world. It is a commitment to become a better man... a balanced man of integrity, virtue and character.

Only eight male students will be accepted into the program. Dr. Balistrieri will be interviewing applicants for the program the first two weeks of October. If you are interested please contact Lori Benner (7-1604) to make an appointment with Dr. Balistrieri. At that appointment you will learn more about the program, your questions will be answered and you can better decide if this program is for you.

Academic Success Groups

This Fall 2010 Psychological Services is offering the opportunity for any and all students to become members of an academic success group. Academic support groups are designed for students who are facing academic difficulties. Research clearly indicates that participation in such a group will significantly increase the probability for success by the student participant. Relationships, connections, a modicum of academic skill building and a focus on interpersonal awareness and development are the core components of these groups. The groups are effective for students who are emotionally withdrawn, for students who are lacking study skills, for students who lack motivation and/or are procrastinators and for students who are temporarily stuck.

Some sections of the group will begin immediately and others will begin later in the semester. The groups run for five or six sessions and are scheduled at different times on different days of the week. New groups are starting each week.  If you are interested please stop by Psychological Services or call (7-1604) to make a short appointment to learn more and discuss your interest in the group.

Non-Specific Topic Therapy Group 2

This Fall 2010 a member of the Psychological Services staff, Dr. Marie Shaw, is offering the opportunity for students to become part of a non-specified topic therapy group. Groups such as this tend to focus on intra-personal and inter-personal processes such as intimacy, relationships, boundaries and deeper awareness of self. Such a group provides an opportunity to practice new behaviors within a safe, confidential and supportive environment where group members learn to interact in a more honest, genuine and confident manner. This group may be beneficial for those with intimacy issues, self-esteem, depression, anxiety, family of origin concerns, or those who wish to enhance or develop deeper interpersonal relationships. This group plans to meet Monday evenings at 5:00 pm. If you are interested please stop by Psychological Services or call (7-1604) to make a short appointment to learn more and discuss your interest in the group.

Support Group for Survivors of Sexual Assault

Coping with the thoughts and feelings that occur after having been assaulted is very difficult.  You shouldn't have to deal with these things on your own, or alone. A support group for female sexual assault survivors is being formed and you are encouraged to attend. The group offers students an opportunity to share their feelings and reactions in a safe and confidential setting. Being with others who have similar experiences can be helpful in gaining understanding and developing positive strategies to cope with the aftermath of an assault. For more information and meeting location, please contact Psychological Services (7-1604) or stop by and make an appointment to visit with Dr. Shallary S. Duncan or Dr. Marie Shaw.
