ENGR 290: Engineering in a Global/Societal Context
China: Dynamic Changes in an Ancient Land

Location:
China is both the largest country in the world and the oldest continuously functioning civil society, while currently undergoing economic growth and change at an incredible rate. Our trip will look at sites of both cultural and engineering significance, ancient and modern, and consider each in light of our themes. Tentative itinerary includes companies, schools, historical and cultural sites in Shanghai, Nanjing, Beijing, Xian, Chongqing, and Yichang.
Eligibility:
All continuing engineering majors in good standing who have completed their sophomore or junior year at the time of the course are invited to apply. Information sessions and application packets will be available early in the Fall semester. Students who have completed their first year in engineering may apply and will be considered based upon available space and their qualifications.
Details:
1 Bucknell Course Credit, three weeks (approximately May 11-June 2, 2012). Cost will be $6,350; includes tuition, airfare, all admissions, all lodging, most lunches, some dinners. Limited financial aid, not exceeding 50% of a students' school-year aid rate, may be available.
This course fulfills the Global/Societal requirement for Engineering students, the Global Connections requirement for Arts & Science / Dual Degree students, and counts as a W2 for all students.

Applications accepted through November 18. Admission will be based on application materials (grades, essay, recommendations, disciplinary record, visa eligibility). Notification of acceptance will occur before winter break, and a signed "consent to participate" form and deposit will be due January 20, 2012.

Timeline:
11/18/2011: Applications due by 5pm
12/5/2011: Notification of application status
1/20/2012: Intent to Enroll, Conditions of Participation, and Risk and Release forms due; deposit billed
Throughout Spring Semester: Periodic scheduled preparation meetings; health form, vaccinations, passport, international student ID, and associated forms must be completed / obtained.
2/15/2012: First installment billed
TBA: Second installment billed (summer school billing schedule)
5/12/2012: Group leaves from Newark Liberty Airport
6/3/2012: Group returns to Newark Liberty Airport
7/9/2012: Final paper due
