Major and Minor Requirements
Art & Art History
The department offers two majors: in studio art (the creation of art) and art history (the study of visual images within their historical context). The minimum number of courses to establish a major in either studio art or art history is nine. Students design their program of courses in close consultation with their faculty adviser. The major is declared in the Spring of the sophomore year.
The department also offers two minors: in studio art and in art history. The minimum requirement for a minor in studio art is five courses, three of which should be in a specific medium: printmaking sculpture, photography, or painting. At least three courses must be above the 100 level. No more than one course may be taken elsewhere for credit. For the minor in art history, the minimum course requirement is five, two of which must be the foundation-level art history courses, ARTH 101 and 102. At least three courses at the 200 level or above are also required; these courses must cover at least two of the following areas: Ancient and Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque, Modern and Contemporary, or non-European art or art of the minorities or women.
