Bucknellians do the "Dance of the Universe" (video)

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Brian Greene, one of the world's leading theoretical physicists and a creative communicator of cutting-edge scientific concepts, will cap the spring Bucknell Forum national speakers series with the talk, "Breakthrough Thinking: Challenging What We Know," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, in Trout Auditorium. || "Dance of the Universe" (video)
The talk had been postponed earlier this semester due to the speaker's illness.
The talk, which is free and open to the public, is part of the ongoing Bucknell Forum series, "Creativity: Beyond the Box," featuring individuals from a wide range of fields who can provide thoughtful and insightful commentary or interactive experiences on new ways of being creative.
"Brian Greene is precisely one of those creative people," said Margot Vigeant, associate professor of chemical engineering and a member of the Bucknell Forum Task Force. "It is with good reason that The Washington Post calls him the 'single best explainer of abstruse concepts in the world today.'"
The 30th anniversary issue of Discover magazine asked 11 eminent scientists, including Greene, for their science predictions for the next 30 years. Greene pondered string theory, a concept that might be the key to a unified theory of the universe. || Read New York Times op-ed
"(W)e may establish that there is not a unique universe but many," Greene wrote in the magazine. "Each universe would make use of a different form for the extra dimensions, with our universe being just one of many in a grand multiverse. That would be one of the most profound revolutions in thinking we have ever sustained."
In his national best-seller, The Elegant Universe, Greene explored how the theories of general relativity and quantum mechanics transformed the understanding of the universe and introduced the world to string theory. Selling more than a million copies, the book became an Emmy and Peabody award-winning NOVA special that Greene hosted.
His second book, The Fabric of the Cosmos, spent six months on The New York Times best-seller list and is being adapted into a four-part NOVA miniseries to air this fall on PBS. Greene's most recent book, Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos, was published this month.
Another book, Icarus at the Edge of Time, is a futuristic retelling of the Greek myth that The Wall Street Journal described as "terrific" and SEED magazine called "moving and successful." Greene and David Henry Hwang adapted the story for a symphonic performance in collaboration with composer Philip Glass that debuted this past spring.
Greene co-founded The World Science Festival in 2008. An annual event, its mission is to take science out of the laboratory and make the esoteric understandable and the familiar fascinating to the general public.
A graduate of Harvard and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, Greene is a professor in both physics and mathematics at Columbia University.
He has written essays for NPR, Wired Magazine and The New York Times and has appeared on a variety of programs, including "Charlie Rose," "Nightline" and "The Late Show with David Letterman." He has also had cameo appearances in the films "Frequency," "Maze" and "The Last Mimzy."
