LEWISBURG, Pa. — Bucknell University will host "Jazz with a Twist" on Wednesday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Weis Center for the Performing Arts.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is an improvisational jazz and movement trio event with two Bucknell faculty members — drummer Phil Haynes and dancer Kelly Knox — and guest musician Herb Robertson.

"We are privileged to have trumpet and brass great Herb Robertson, one of the original NY Downtown Improvisers, join Bucknell's own jazz artist, Phil Haynes on drums and percussion," said Knox, associate professor of dance.

"The evening will offer a site- and sound-specific performance that uses the contours and acoustics of the Weis Center's beautiful glass lobby as a backdrop for jazz improvisation and real-time choreographed dance."

According to Knox, this trio of performers first worked together as part of the Bucknell Jazz series in the spring of 2007. Haynes introduced Robertson and Knox, and the three of them created a spontaneous music and dance performance a few hours afterward at Bucknell Hall. This event will be a reunion of these artists, yet in a setting that will allow for an entirely new experience for the performers and the audience.

"I am not sure if this is the first performance of its kind, but it will be definitely be a chance to experience the lobby of the Weis Center in an entirely unique and refreshing way," said Knox. "The performance is meant to be inviting and intimate, allowing the audience to sit under the sky of the glass entry way and enjoy the sunset as backdrop to the music and movement exploration."

Robertson became active as a member of the NY Downtown Improvisers scene in 1980. He has since traveled the world playing in jazz and creative music festivals and has toured extensively as a musician and leader throughout the United States and abroad. Robertson has recorded extensively and can be heard on many CDs, radio and tele-broadcasts.
