LEWISBURG, Pa. — Four members of the Bucknell University staff were honored at the annual staff picnic recently with the Geiger and Zeller Awards.
Geiger Awards The Walter C. Geiger Memorial Award recognizes members of the administrative staff who demonstrate sustained excellence and embrace Bucknell University's core competencies in the conduct of their administrative responsibilities. The award honors the late Walter C. Geiger, former director of facilities.
Recipients of the 2012 Geiger Awards were Greg Koontz, assistant director of utilities maintenance with Facilities, and Lisa Veloz, assistant director of enterprise system services with Library and Information Technology.
In addition to maintaining campus utilities and HVAC systems as well as Kinney Natatorium and elevators across campus, Koontz has developed specifications for the design and procurement of HVAC and mechanical equipment to be included as part of large-scale renovations and new construction projects, most recently the Campus Theatre, the Dewitt Building, the Post Office, two new fraternities, and design discussions for Academic West.
Veloz manages the portfolio of all major enterprise systems work requests. Recent projects included the implementation of the new University-wide calendaring system, which combines event and academic scheduling into the same system for the first time; the growth of document imaging capabilities, which streamlined the campus business process; and the development of the next version of Bucknell's mobile presence.
Zeller Awards The John F. Zeller Memorial Award for support staff excellence honors the late John F. Zeller, former vice president for business and fiscal affairs and general counsel emeritus. The award recognizes support staff who demonstrate consistent excellence in the conduct of their responsibilities.
Recipients of the 2012 Zeller Awards were Deb Baney, academic assistant in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and Jim Harman, mail services/delivery driver with Publications, Print and Mail.
Baney supports the department chair and connects faculty with students and a wide range of administrative offices. She was commended for her familiarity with faculty research, course curricula, student needs, and institutional resources as well as her willingness and interest in taking on new responsibilities. Nominators called her the glue that holds her department together and noted her ability to connect with a diverse array of students.
With Bucknell for more than 30 years, Harman was recognized for exemplary professionalism, unfailing helpfulness and the ability to connect with individuals on campus as well as a willingness to go above and beyond in the course of carrying out his duties. Nominators lauded him as a model employee represents Bucknell well when he makes deliveries off-campus.
