LEWISBURG, Pa. — H&C Grove's Mill, a commercially operating, water-powered gristmill near Lewisburg, is the subject of the documentary, "Something Different: A Working Gristmill."
The documentary will be shown Thursday, Nov. 1, at 4 p.m. in the Smith Library of the Vaughan Literature Building at Bucknell University. Light refreshments will be served; no registration is necessary.
A discussion about the mill, located on Buffalo Creek between Lewisburg and Mazeppa, will follow with Tom Rich, Bucknell professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, and David Del Testa, associate professor of history at Bucknell.
Videographer and documentarist Erin Murphy will participate in the discussion via video conference.
Rich and Del Testa have worked with Murphy and the mill's owner-operator, Curt Falck, on the film over the past two years, with the support of Bucknell University, the Society for Industrial Archaeology, and the Union County Historical Society.
The 15-minute film offers a brief introduction into the operation of a working water-powered gristmill, where Falck turns grain into flour and animal feed using water power, as well as a reflection on why this mill has survived and operated continuously since opening in 1783. It reflects on the blend of nature, agriculture, history, and rural society that characterize life in Union County in the past and today.
Rich and Del Testa also are preparing a manuscript for the Union County Historical Society Heritage Series called "The Mills of Union County, Pa."
The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of the ongoing "Stories of the Susquehanna Valley" series, sponsored by the Place Studies Initiative (formerly the Nature and Human Communities Initiative) of Bucknell University's Environmental Center.
