All Bucknellians are encouraged to expand their knowledge of dance performance, composition, history and technique by taking classes in modern, jazz, and/or ballet technique, dance history, dance composition, and any of the master classes offered throughout the year.
The Fall Dance Showcase and the spring Choreographer's Showcase, under faculty and student direction, feature a wide array of new works by students who have taken Dance Composition, as well as faculty and guest artist pieces. Auditions occur at the beginning of each semester, providing a performance opportunity for students of all levels of experience. Rehearsal commitment is approximately one and a half hours a week per piece. Beginning technique classes and student dance groups are also invited to perform. With such a diverse offering, the showcase concerts enjoy enthusiastic support from the campus and surrounding communities.
The Bucknell Dance Company (BDC) is supported by the Department of Theatre and Dance and integrated into the educational mission of the Dance Program. Two yearly BDC performances in a variety of styles are featured in the department’s main-stage season, presenting the creative research of the dance faculty, the work of professional guest artists, and selected student choreographers. These concerts are produced with lighting, set, and costume designs by the professional faculty and staff in the department. The company maintains a yearly membership of approximately twenty-five dancers, who are selected by audition at the beginning of each year. Company members rehearse 2-6 hours per week, and must be enrolled in a technique class each semester. Other membership duties include a weekly company class, participation in guest artist residencies and outreach activities for the local community.
