Senior Field Trip

in the field

Every fall, the senior class travels on a field trip to observe projects that pertain to their classroom learning. This trip provides a great opportunity for students to experience, first-hand, the real world of civil engineering and the ongoing projects in this field.

Planes, trains, automobiles – bridges, landfills, high-rises too!

In Bucknell's civil engineering and environmental engineering department, you will get the background you'll need for your first job in engineering and the critical thinking and communications skills to bolster you throughout your life.

As highly skilled professionals, civil and environmental engineers will be in demand to plan, design, construct, and assist in the operation and maintenance of transportation systems, water resources, environmental protection systems and urban development. Bonus! In our liberal arts environment, you'll also develop your writing, communication and critical thinking skills to take your career to the next level.

Did You Know?

Bucknell professors identify teaching as their number-one priority and they welcome close interactions with students.

The program strikes a balance between modern computer applications and "hands-on" engineering.

Bucknell's civil and environmental engineering majors learn about global and societal concerns, ethics and sustainability when making engineering decisions.

Selected students can participate in the Institute for Leadership in Technology & Management, a joint effort with Bucknell's School of Management that brings engineering and business students together to prepare the next generation of technology managers.

All civil and environmental engineering students participate in multiple field trips to major construction sites and other civil engineering works, including a three-day trip during their senior year.

Douglas Gabauer

Associate Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering

Douglas Gabauer

"The most interesting project to date was to design a ski slope in Colorado. It was a challenge presented by a student's family and who knows, it might get built one day."

Richard Crago

Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering

Richard Crago

"Students tend to be focused on, 'How do I solve this particular problem?' which is a good way to think in the middle of a design problem. But I want to give them tools they are going to be able to use for any design problem."

Hands on Experience

Internships

Internships

Bucknell provides opportunities for students to find summer employment in industry, government or academia. Recently, students have interned at:

  • Buck Seifert & Jost Consulting Engineers
  • Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
  • Deutsche Bank

Study Abroad

Study Abroad

Each year, about 20 percent of our engineering students study overseas in their junior year at such locations as the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom and the University of Queensland in Australia.

For students unable to spend a full semester or year abroad, Bucknell offers a three-week program titled Engineering in a Global and Societal context.

Facilities and Research

Facilities and Research

Bucknell's facilities and instrumentation allow students to participate as active learners, not as observers, in laboratories. For example, in addition to our indoor geotechnical engineering laboratory, students participate in "field" laboratories using a full-scale drilling rig and associated in situ testing and sampling equipment.
