Engineering and Liberal Arts

Spotlight: Tung Phan '17

"I remember researching top engineering schools, and Bucknell popped up. I became more interested because it also had a strong liberal arts core."

Did You Know?

The mathematics program at Bucknell has been home to five recipients of the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship, awarded to very few mathematics majors nationwide.

Mathematics professors help students develop the habits of exact thinking, purposeful abstraction and disciplined creativity implicit in mathematical accomplishment.

Bucknell teams consistently do well in the annual Putnam Competition, placing as high as 10th among about 400 schools.

The study of mathematics is one of the oldest human endeavors. It is the basic language of the natural sciences and engineering, and it is a vital tool in the social sciences, business and the arts.

Bucknell teams consistently do well in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, placing as high as 9th among over 2000 teams.

Meet all of our faculty

Emily Dryden

Assistant Professor

Emily Dryden

"Mathematics and its study are not simply about numbers and esoteric theory, but also about the ability to reason logically and build increasingly complex arguments on a solid knowledge base."

More About Professor Dryden
George Exner

Professor

George Exner

"The most rewarding thing about working with students is when they change. Suppose a student can't do a problem immediately. My job is to get them to tackle the problem and help them work their way through to being able to do it."

More About Professor Exner
Kelly Bickel

Assistant Professor

Kelly Bickel

"My goal is for my students to see that mathematics is much more than rote computation. It is a precise art form that can be highly beneficial in most any career path they choose."

Internships

Mathematics students often gain career experience through summer internships. Recently, students have been interns at:

  • Putnam Investments
  • Graphic Marking Systems
  • National Security Agency

Advanced Education

Graduate and Professional

Mathematics students often go on to graduate school to study mathematics, statistics, physics or economics; others enroll in law or medical school. Recently graduate schools of choice include:

  • Cornell University
  • Yale University
  • University of Wisconsin

Career Paths

Career Paths

The study of mathematics offers excellent career prospects, including actuarial work, analytics, biostatistics, quantitative modeling and cryptology. With Bucknell's broad liberal arts focus, mathematics majors have the cultural, social and global awareness that employers desire.
