Kristen Bucaria, Class of '12

By Molly O'Brien-Foelsch

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Look out Kenneth Parcell, there's a new page in town.

Kristen Bucaria, Class of '12, is as excited as Jack McBrayer's 30 Rock character about her upcoming position as an NBC page.

And after she graduates from Bucknell University on Sunday, she's ready to exchange her cap and gown for a Brooks Brothers uniform and a peacock-logo pin.

Bucaria said she's still trying to find her career niche and wants to explore the depth and breadth of NBCUniversal through various assignments.

In her yearlong position, she'll rotate among 12-week assignments in publicity, marketing and news production. She'll also give studio tours and act as a liaison with the public.

Of the 7,000 applicants to the NBC Page Program each year, only about 60 to 80 are accepted. Bucaria credits her experiences at Bucknell with helping her become one of the lucky 1 percent who made the cut.

"The Career Development Center helped me get internships at NBCUniversal both my sophomore and junior year," said the political science and film/media studies major, "but everything I did at Bucknell helped prepare me for the program in one way or another. My coursework clearly prepared me for this position."

She said swimming as a Bucknell student-athlete also helped her develop valuable job skills including time management, organization and teamwork, but she believes her study abroad experiences will turn out to be the best preparation for the NBC Page Program.

"Last summer I went to Greece and Turkey with Bucknell, which made me want to study abroad in Bucknell in London for my final semester. Studying abroad was a challenging and rewarding experience that helped me learn how to be ready for anything."

That "anything" is likely to involve a career in the news, production or entertainment industry. The NBC Page Program has a 75 percent placement rate at NBCUniversal. Past pages include media personality Regis Philbin, journalist Ted Koppel and actress Kate Jackson.
