scholar, scholarship Capitalize only when part of the formal name of an award or prize. Example: Fulbright Scholarship.
seasons Do not capitalize unless used in the official name of a program or event. Examples: He studied psychology in fall 2007. She plans to graduate this spring. The Fall Festival will include several alumni activities. Several hundred students will graduate during Summer Commencement.
senior Fourth-year undergraduate. Avoid super senior. Explain instead that the student is a fifth-year senior in a program of study that requires such status.

sexual orientation Include sexual orientation only when it is pertinent to the story. Gay and lesbian are preferred over homosexual except in clinical contexts.
SMS Use text messaging instead when referring to short message service.
social networking The practice of people meeting, interacting and sharing information online through sites such as Facebook and MySpace.
software titles Capitalize but do not use quotation marks or italics for general software programs. Use quotation marks for video game titles. Examples: Windows, Word, “Super Mario Bros.”

spam Acceptable in all references to unsolicited e-mail.

state names, abbreviations State names should be abbreviated only when used with city names (Lewisburg, Pa.). In copy, abbreviations should follow AP style. However, ZIP abbreviations (Lewisburg, PA 17837) should be used in all cases for full mailing addresses.
student-athlete Use to refer to members of Bucknell’s varsity athletics programs.
