For First Year Students
Thoughts on Being a First Year College Student...
You will sometimes feel scared, overwhelmed, sad or lonely . Most first year students experience such feelings, even if they don't admit it.
You are in the process of becoming an adult. Sometimes you may not feel that you are ready to be in college. In fact, you may even find yourself wishing you could turn back the clock, and return home.
It is not unusual for first year students to worry about fitting in socially, managing their time, making it academically and learning how to live with a roommate.
You may feel that time is moving very slowly - that you won't make it to the end of the week let alone the end of the semester. (Believe it or not, by the end of the spring semester you will wonder where the time went!)
No matter how hard you study, you may not always do as well academically as you did in high school. This is quite common. You may also find that your ideas about choice of major and career have changed. Sound familiar? Tips for Academic Success
It is normal to stay in touch with family and friends at home but your experience will be more rewarding if you begin to establish meaningful connections and relationships on campus.
Try to get involved in at least one extra-curricular activity or group.
Remember that approximately 40% of your class will seek support of one kind or another from Psychological Services before they graduate. In other words, it's ok to ask for help.
