Concrete hardscape and a light colored roof help to reduce the heat island effect of the building.

Concrete was chosen as a paving material because of its high reflectivity. Specific shingles with a high solar reflectance index were selected over regular asphalt shingles, and a white membrane roof was installed for the remainder of the roof. These materials help reduce the amount of solar gain in the building, thus also reduce the cooling demands and energy use in the building.
