Writing Instruction

Writing instruction at Bucknell takes place in writing-intensive courses offered at all levels in all disciplines. W1 courses offer a general introduction to college writing, while W2 courses allow students to practice rhetorical conventions in particular disciplines.

Writing Requirement

All Bucknell students must successfully complete one W1 course and two W2 courses before graduating. The Writing Program is Bucknell's only University-wide degree requirement. || See a full description of Bucknell's Writing Requirement.

Writing Program Oversight

The Writing Across the Curriculum Council, consisting of faculty representatives from both colleges and from each division within the College of Arts & Sciences, oversees the Writing Program and the W course development process.

The Writing Program Director chairs the Writing Across the Curriculum Council and normally serves a three-year term. The current Writing Program Director is Abe Feuerstein, Associate Professor of Education.

Writing Center

Established to support the Writing Program, the Writing Center's professional staff and peer consultants offer assistance for faculty members who are teaching writing as well as to writers across the University community.

History of the Program

Those who are interested in the history, administration and rationale of the Writing Program are welcome to read the  Writing Program Legislation (pdf). Some modifications were made to the legislation in response to an internal review conducted in the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 academic years. The complete description of Bucknell's Writing Requirement reflects these changes.

Members of the Bucknell community are welcome to explore the Writing Program & Writing Center Annual Report (AY 2014-2015) (pdf)
