Leading and Learning
"I've lived in various places in the U.S. and abroad, so I always felt different. Now I feel like I have so much inside of me that I'm sure of. Bucknell has helped me grow into the person that I am proud of today."
The 12-week student teaching semester (EDUC 349 and EDUC 449), includes extensive unit research and lesson planning, implementation, and presentation, along with the completion of written assignments pertinent to their experience. In addition, students develop and present electronic program portfolios, further demonstrating their technological expertise.

Combine a liberal arts education with professional preparation, and gain a solid background in principles and theories of education, rather than a series of methods, so you can be a flexible and proactive professional throughout your career.
Graduates of our programs teach in elementary and secondary public, private, and charter schools here and abroad. Others enter careers in business, industry, and government. Many students pursue graduate degrees in fields such as educational psychology and research, school counseling, school psychology, college student personnel, and speech and occupational therapy. Others use their undergraduate degree as a foundation for the study of law or medicine.
Starting with their first year, students begin to observe and help in the local public schools. These opportunities continue throughout their education, culminating in student teaching in the senior year.
Bucknell's English as a Second Language (ESL) certification program provides elementary education, foreign language and English majors with an extra credential upon graduation.
A pre-certification initial preparation program (Pre-CIP) is available for students interested in becoming teachers.
Secondary teaching certification is offered in art, biology, chemistry, communication, English, earth science, environmental science, French, general science, German, Latin, mathematics, music, physics, social studies and Spanish.
Bucknell offers two undergraduate degrees in education. The Bachelor of Science degree in education with majors in early childhood and elementary education is for students who plan to become educators. The Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in education, is designed for students interested in the study of education as a discipline, who are not interested in teaching certification, and who are likely to enter graduate school or employment in public service, business or industry following graduation.
The Master of Science degree in education (M.S.Ed.) is offered in college student personnel.

Recently, education students have studied in Denmark, Florence, and Bologna. If you will be student teaching, consult closely with your academic adviser to plan a summer, semester, or year-long study abroad opportunity.
Education students have opportunities for applied and research experiences throughout their undergraduate careers. Often, faculty members serve as mentors while students conduct independent research; in other cases, faculty include students as part of their research team.
Internships provide career preparation, especially to those education students who plan to pursue work outside of teaching. The Bucknell Public Interest Program educates students about non-profit careers and provides occasions for students to network with those in the non-profit sector. Recent placements include Alexandra MacLean '13: Angel 34 Foundation and Tyler McClenithan '13: Lehigh Carbon Community College.
