Students across all disciplines find opportunities for meaningful scholarly work with faculty mentors. In addition to independent and senior honors projects during the year, Bucknell also offers a number of undergraduate summer research grants to students in various disciplines.
Not only do students learn about a particular research project, but they also learn how to use their analytical and critical thinking skills. As a result, they're better prepared to take that first job or go on to graduate school.
David Manthos '11, "Drilling down: the Marcellus shale natural gas discovery and Pennsylvania's new energy boom," with Alf Siewers. Manthos will research, map and write a creative non-fiction account of an area of the Susquehanna Valley undergoing change due to the Marcellus Shale natural gas boom; final account will be posted on a Bucknell website about the Marcellus Shale issue.
Jessica Snyder '11, "Researching the African-American presence in comics and cartoons," with James Peterson. Collect extensive research on narrative theory, Africana Studies, and visual representation and signification; this compilation will be incorporated into Professor Peterson's manuscript proposal and contribute to Bucknell's newly established Griot Institute for Africana Studies.
Benjamin Bible '10, "Tolkien's political economy" with Alf Siewers. Project to study political economy in relation to fantasy fiction, i.e., to explore ways in which fantasy literature can fulfill the call for an environmentalism of the imagination.
Cathy Cuddy '10, "Eriugena's conception of free will and its influence in early Celtic culture and literature," with Alf Siewers. Project to study and compare John Scottus Eirugena's philosophy concerning free will with the philosophy of St. Augustine, to demonstrate the more forceful impact of Eriugena's type of approach on both literature and culture in early medieval Ireland.
Jocelyne Scott '11, "Selling beauty/selling change: Patriarchal and feminist ideologies in advertising," with Glynis Carr. Jocelyne will compare the Dove Real Beauty advertising campaign to negative ads in Cosmopolitan magazine.
