Since its establishment in 1967 as the first of the Associated University
Presses consortium, the FDU Press has produced well over 1,500 books
on a wide variety of subjects. Approximately 40 new books are issued
each year.
The Press has particular strengths in literary studies, world history
and politics, biography, film, ethnic studies, sociology, the Civil
War, art, religion, local history, and urban studies. Press books are
reviewed regularly in leading academic and library journals in the U.S.
and other countries, and they are displayed at major academic meetings.
Each year, between 150,000 and 200,000 brochures are mailed to announce
the publication of new works.
More than 750,000 FDU Press books may be found in library collections
throughout the world. Close to 300 libraries in the United States and
the United Kingdom order all FDU Press publications, and another 1,500
libraries purchase them on a selective basis.
Manuscripts considered by the FDU Press are subject both to internal
review by the Editorial Committee and external evaluation by specialist
readers. The Editorial Committee, composed of Fairleigh Dickinson University
faculty in a variety of disciplines, meets regularly to select manuscripts
for publication. Decisions of the committee are determined on scholarly
merit and value. In many cases, based on its deliberations and the comments
of evaluators, the committee works closely with authors through a revision
process to assure that manuscripts meet a high standard.
The Press invites submissions of scholarly works in all fields, including
essay collections. For such collections, the majority of material should
be previously unpublished and the essays must have a consistent unifying
theme and a scholarly introduction. The Press also publishes scholarly
editions of literary works in English or in English translation. It
does not publish textbooks or original fiction, poetry, or plays, and
it discourages submission of unrevised dissertations.
Authors wishing to submit work to the FDU Press should address a query
letter to the Director, describing the manuscript and the contribution
it will make to its field. If the Director and the Editorial Committee
conclude the project is suitable, they will request submission of the
manuscript under the stipulation that no other press is considering
the work at the same time.
The Associated University Presses has final approval of all accepted
manuscripts. Books accepted by the Editorial Committee are published
by Associated University Presses.
