Internship Title: Summer Intern

Employer and location: PricewaterhouseCoopers, New York, NY

Describe your duties:

PricewaterhouseCoopers is a large public accounting firm involved in various activities such as audit, tax, and consulting.  I interned in the Audit line of service in the Financial Services sector, specifically working on the client engagement with Prudential Financial, Inc.  My job was to assist the team in making sure the financial statements had accurate information and numbers.  Everyday activities included making variance reports on Microsoft Excel, tying out sections of financial statements, updating documentation, and general support such as copying and formatting excel spreadsheets.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?

Meeting everyone.  The internship was a wonderful opportunity to meet and network with so many successful individuals who are further along the career path that I wish to take.  In addition, I got to meet other interns who are in the same position as myself and I made a lot of friends because we had the same struggles and successes.

I also enjoyed the fact that everyone at the firm treated me as a first year associate.  Thanks to this internship, I am now comfortable that I will not be lost when I walk into work for the first time.  I know what to expect and what kind of work I will be doing, because I already did it as an intern!  I feel that this internship will give me a huge advantage because I already know how to use the software programs and systems.  This will allow me to focus on the work and help others who have not used the system before.

What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?

The training program is a necessary hurdle to prepare you to work, but can be boring especially if you have already taken classes at Bucknell University that do a good job of preparing you. Depending on your primary location for work (some teams work at the PwC office, others work at the client), the commute can be inconvenient.

How did your experience at Bucknell prepare you for your internship?  How did your internship prepare you for a career?

Like I mentioned before, Bucknell University's accounting program is excellent and the classes prepared me exceptionally.  I found myself using a lot of skills that I developed in my accounting classes, my management classes, and Auditing.

What recommendations do you have for other students considering doing an internship?

You can never start too early.  Even if most companies only consider juniors for internships, the experience of talking to professionals and updating your resume will help you in the future.

Should you succeed in getting an internship, take advantage of it.  It is a wonderful opportunity to meet with professionals and ask them for advice or to talk about what they did to get where they are now.  In addition, use the internship to show your potential in the workplace.  PwC typically offers full time positions to those who prove to be both professional and pleasant to work with.
