History & Mission

The Art Galleries are a program of Bucknell University that creates meaningful encounters between artists, students, scholars, the public and works of art. These encounters occur in the Samek Art Gallery, the Downtown Art Gallery, the Museum Collection Study Room, Connections Gallery, and the Project Room. These spaces activate the intellectual life of campus arts and challenge students and extend their creativity. The Galleries are academic art labs where experimental art, innovative curatorial practices, and co-curricular programming generate new ways to engage and inspire audiences.

Known previously as Center Gallery, what is now the Samek Art Gallery was renamed for Bucknell and Gallery patrons Edward and Marthanna Samek after a generous gift in 2001. The Samek Art Gallery presently holds a collection of 5,000 objects highlighting the art of our time. Other strengths include: The Samel H. Kress Collection of Baroque and Renaissance, Japanese decorative art, modern and contemporary, and historic prints.

The Downtown Art Gallery located in the historic DeWitt Building sits within the heart of Lewisburg. At new addition to the Bucknell community, this gallery aims to serve as a learning lab for curatorial experimentation and a public programming partnership within other arts organizations in Lewisburg.

The Art Galleries exhibitions and public programming are free to the public.
