Environmental Engineering Lab

The Environmental Engineering and Science Laboratory is a state of the art, well-equipped laboratory that is able to perform most types of laboratory analyses. The Environmental Lab is used by many different disciplines across the campus including the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Geology, Chemistry, Biology, and Environmental Studies. Each department uses the laboratory for both courses and research which provides students with hands-on experience in environmental analysis methods.

The University has invested significant funds for renovation, expansion, and equipment for the environmental laboratory. For example, the laboratory contains the following equipment:

  1. Thermo Jarrel Ash Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer
  2. Aurora Instruments Atomic Adsorption Spectrometer
  3. Dionex Ion Chromatograph
  4. Dionex HPLC Ultimate 3000 with diode array detector
  5. O.I. Analytical Total Organic Carbon Analyzer
  6. Hewlett Packard 5890 GC with FID and ECD detectors
  7. Hewlett Packard 6890 GC with FID and TCD detectors
  8. Hewlett Packard 7890A GC with 5975C MS detector
  9. Anaerobic and aerobic laboratory scale reactors
  10. High speed centrifuge
  11. Pacific Scientific Particle Size Analyzer
  12. Biopolymer analysis equipment including biochemical analytical equipment
  13. Zeta-meter
  14. Bench top and field meters (pH, DO, conductivity, ISEs, turbidity, Hydrolab)
  15. Routine analysis equipment (scales, ovens, etc.)
  16. Full-size Coy anaerobic glove bag with airlock
  17. Electrophoresis equipment for biochemical analyses
  18. Microtox toxicity system
  19. Constant temperature room
  20. Camera equipped phase-contrast microscope
  21. Fluorometer
  22. Low pressure liquid chromatograph with fraction collector
  23. Phipps and Bird Belt Filter Press Simulator

The Environmental Engineering & Science Lab is run by a full-time laboratory director, Huan Luong, and houses graduate students, undergraduate research assistants and one postdoctoral research associate. The environmental program has performed work with a number of industries and governmental agencies including:
