Bucknell has an endowment worth about $720 million. Our comprehensive fee is more than $60,000. Our students, our faculty and our campus are exceptional. These facts raise an important question: Why are we having a campaign to raise a half-a-billion dollars?
This FAQ explains the reasons behind this campaign, the initiatives it will fund, the difference it will make in the student experience and the lifetime of opportunities it will create for our alumni. At the core of this campaign is a stark reality: Donations to Bucknell are the margin of difference between our being an average university and a great one.
Donor gifts affect every aspect of campus life - our students (62 percent of whom receive scholarships or financial aid); the faculty (who include some of the finest teacher-scholars anywhere); the technologies, labs, sports and recreational spaces students enjoy (many made possible by donor gifts); and the possibilities that Bucknell's excellence and reputation offer to our graduates. The list goes on.
So Bucknell has a choice. We can be satisfied with the status quo and not fundraise for ambitious goals. In that case, year by year, inflation will reduce the value of our resources, time will wear down the campus, and our students and faculty will take their talents elsewhere. The value of Bucknell degrees will decline, and prospects for our alumni will decline. A cycle of failure will have begun.
Or we can do what Bucknell has done since its founding, through the challenges of war and economic strife, through the changes that raised its stature over the decades - we as a University community can look forward and focus on goals that will make a Bucknell education even more meaningful.
That is the Bucknell way. That is why we are having this campaign, and that is why it will succeed. Because we believe in the future, and we believe in the future of Bucknell.
Who believes in Bucknell? We do.
