We have three main goals with this campaign:
But the larger purpose is this: Every generation of Bucknellians, like those who came before us, must aspire to make Bucknell the best version of itself. A university that does not offer new programs, does not catalyze its collective energies, does not set its sights high, is destined for irrelevance. But a university that marshals itself to new challenges does change lives, and leads.
Bucknell has always prided itself on ensuring that our students of today are tomorrow's well-educated thinkers, citizens, change-makers and leaders. This campaign is our statement that we today can and will do our part to create a magnificent future for Bucknell, for our students.
We have set an overall campaign goal of $500 million. This is by far the biggest campaign in Bucknell's history. The most recent Bucknell campaign, which ended in 2000, raised $188 million.
As of March 2014, the campaign has raised more than $309 million in gifts and pledges - more than half of our goal.
We expect the campaign to end in 2017.
The campaign targets these five overarching areas:
Within the five overarching areas, we will focus fundraising around six academic and residential initiatives. Each of these initiatives has a critical mass of faculty and students engaged in it, promises to significantly impact the overall Bucknell experience, and has already drawn donor interest.
The Creative Campus Initiative
Bucknell has the potential to be a model creative campus, where every day, students discover new dimensions of their originality and capacity to lead. Funding opportunities include programs in which students will work with faculty across the curriculum to hone their skills as creative thinkers and use their ingenuity to address real-world problems. Donors may also choose to support an interdisciplinary endowed fund to encourage the fresh integration of technologies into creative projects across the curriculum.
The Global Learning Initiative
We want to build on our robust overseas-study and service-learning programs to create new, substantive global study experiences that will make undergraduate education at Bucknell a global education. For example, donors can help support our new efforts to give most of our engineering and management students global experiences, opening up possibilities already available to their classmates in other disciplines; and help establish in Washington, D.C., and New York City internship experiences that will provide firsthand exposure to foreign policy, world affairs, international development, arts, media and global economics.
The Human Health Initiative
Thanks to faculty expertise and programs on campus, and a new partnership with nearby Geisinger Health System, a national leader in healthcare delivery and research, Bucknell has the potential to become a global draw for students and scholars interested in the health sciences. The highly collaborative relationship on campus among science, engineering, social science and management fields creates opportunities for donors to invest in projects that will allow students to work with researchers at a depth rarely offered to undergraduates on some of the most pressing challenges in healthcare technologies, bioinformatics, biostatistics and neuroscience.
The Management Education Initiative
The School of Management, established in 2008, strives to integrate management and liberal arts education in ways that specially prepare students for success and leadership. Donors can endow our three hallmark hands-on programs - Management 101, ILTM (Institute for Leadership in Technology and Management) and SMIF (Student-Managed Investment Fund) and draw employers to our graduates as never before. Donors can also help create endowments, faculty chairs and professorships that will allow us to hire faculty so that we can meet the great demand for management courses from students who are not management majors.
The Residential Learning Initiative
At Bucknell, learning occurs in and out of the classroom - in dining spaces, on the playing field, and everywhere our students live, study and recreate. As a residential university, we seek to strengthen the breadth and depth of our myriad learning opportunities. Whether students are conducting research with faculty, participating in leadership programs, or being mentored by a coach or staff member, they are preparing for success in an increasingly complex world.
The Sustainability Initiative
Sustainability, a core principle for institutions and businesses of all kinds, requires expertise in fields in which Bucknell excels or has special resources. This fact gives Bucknell the opportunity to offer students experiences that are available at few other places. Donor funding opportunities include a Sustainability Design Studio where students will work on such cutting-edge projects as the design of zero-impact buildings and carbon-neutral cities; and an endowed Institute for Leadership in Sustainability to explore the complexities of sustainability in a dynamic, applied format, tying students directly to an area with burgeoning career opportunities.
