Northern Irish Cities: Representation and Resistance

This is a short-term (3 weeks) study-abroad program for students interested in the causes, characteristics, and consequences of the social conflict ("the Troubles") in Northern Ireland. The purpose of this program is to teach students about the sectarian conflict between Catholics/ Nationalists/ Republicans and Protestants/ Unionists/ Loyalists in the area by means of coursework and intensive cultural immersion.

The program has been designed to give students first-hand experience with the people of Northern Ireland, with community-based efforts to understand the conflict on a local level, and to gain an appreciation for the culture, history, geography, and politics of the country.

This program is part of an ongoing, collaborative relationship between Bucknell and the University of Ulster. It involves both educational opportunities through Magee College, as well as research through the Center for Voluntary Action Studies. We also are part of a consortium for study in Northern Ireland that includes Swarthmore, Rutgers, and the West Virginia University School of Social Work. Two faculty co-directors lead a group of students into the experience, providing insight and additional and complimentory information to the already extensive repitiore.
