One of my favorite classes at Bucknell has been Social Movements in Society, an international relations seminar. As an activist within the LGBT movement, it really connected with my interests.
"One of the biggest ways that Bucknell has impacted me is with the managing for sustainability major. It's a good way to balance social justice and activism with something practical. I'm not sure what I want to do after graduation, but I would have a very hard time not doing something social justice oriented. "I would say that I impact Bucknell as a soccer player. The team here is really smart. It's a very different experience from some Division I programs where the focus is on the athletic side, but not the academic side. The program really works with the professors. We have something called sideline coaching — our professors are invited to come to a practice, so they see their students outside the classroom. It's great because they get to know us as athletes. Then, when we say that we're coming from practice, they know what that actually means. They get to see the work that we put in.
"This summer, I'm hoping to do an internship working with youth homelessness in Seattle, with a focus on LGBT youth. They are a disproportionately high number in the homeless population because they are more likely to get kicked out of their homes. Because they're minors, they can't go to a homeless shelter without being put into the child or foster care systems. They make up about 40 percent of youth homelessness on any given night."
