I believe in getting to know different people, cultures and places since the world is becoming more intertwined every day. I see it as a symbol of connecting worlds.”

Congratulations on your graduation, Ushma!

"I'm very grateful to Bucknell. I meet a lot of inspiring people here every day. I love the professors and my friends. I love the Bucknell family — it's like a second home to me. There are so many projects happening and there are so many ways to be involved.

"During winter break last year, I co-led Bucknell's first service trip to Nepal. The idea came about the summer after sophomore year when I heard about a similar trip being organized by Nepali students from other schools. That inspired me and I wanted to do something like that at Bucknell. It was something I felt that I could contribute to the community. I knew it would be Bucknell's first trip to South Asia. I thought, 'Why not bring Bucknellians to that side of the world?'

"I believe in getting to know different people, cultures and places since the world is becoming more intertwined every day. I see it as a symbol of connecting worlds. We planned that the trip would be mostly service-based. Doing service, as opposed to tourism, helps you know the people and the country better. We went to a village an hour outside of Kathmandu, Nepal's capital city. We basically conducted a winter camp with the kids there. We taught them English and did lots of creative activities with them.

"I really wanted to do this trip — it was my dream. Organizing and planning it was a lot of work, but Bucknell's supportive faculty and staff members helped me plan the project and make the trip a success. I am so grateful and thankful to them."

Ushma is from Kathmandu, Nepal
