Required Course: Tropical Marine Biology (BIOL 245)
The Bucknell in the Virgin Islands program provides both science and non-science majors with a unique opportunity to fulfill a lab science requirement while exploring the biodiversity of reef ecosystems.
A field course concerned with the biology of coral reef organisms and the reef ecosystem. The course is offered in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands from May - June. BIOL 245 is open for lab science credit to non-science students with permission of the instructor. Majors may also take this course to fulfill one of the 32 credits required for graduation.
The course is organized around lectures/ discussions and daily field trips to the coral reefs that surround the Virgin Islands. The course culminates in a descriptive project agreed upon between the student and instructor. Each student is required to keep a detailed journal of his/her field experiences. This journal serves in part as the basis for the grade in the course. This year the course will be taught at Cinnamon Bay, St. John, USVI, and Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands. Students are expected to be able to swim. Snorkeling will be taught the first day of the course. Facilities are available for SCUBA diving.
