Welcome to "Cool Classes," a regular feature that highlights the interesting, intriguing and unexpected in the Bucknell University course catalog.

What class? ENGL 288: Literature of Downton Abbey

Who teaches it? Professor Erica Delsandro, English

"Students who watch Downton Abbey come in very excited and with a high level of engagement," said Delsandro. "Those who are unfamiliar with the show enroll for different but related reasons: interest in the history, culture and/or novels of the time. I think knowing the show gives them a sense of familiarity with the period and thus, a way to enter novels that might otherwise seem unfamiliar, irrelevant or academic. And yes: I do show clips from Downton Abbey

"If students can invest their emotional energies in the Crawley family saga, then they can engage with and invest in the characters of Baldry Court in Rebecca West's Return of the Soldier or Charles Ryder and Sebastian Flyte in Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited."
