Ushma Manandhar '15 wanted Bucknellians to experience the other side of the globe by initiating a service-learning trip to her homeland of Nepal. She and her student co-leader, Rishard Rheyas '15, organized a group of 12 more students, accompanied by Prof. Coralynn Davis, women's and gender studies, to perform service work through Volunteers Initiative Nepal. From a base in Kathmandu, the travelers helped lead children's camps in two nearby villages. They enjoyed engaging with the children in arts and crafts, English lessons, basic hygiene instruction and playtime. The Bucknellians rode elephants in Chitwan National Park, toured the ancient city and many World Heritage Sites, and explored historic palaces and temples. Based on this year's success, Manandhar hopes to plan another trip next winter.
