Recovery from Hurricane Katrina continues in New Orleans, the break destination for 13 students, Prof. Kevin Myers, psychology, and two staff members. The travelers stayed at Camp Hope and worked with the St. Bernard Project, an organization that matches volunteers with cleanup and construction projects around the city. The team helped demolish a house in the Ninth Ward; cleaned up debris with Provost Mick Smyer, a New Orleans native; and learned a variety of skills, including putting up drywall, skimming, sanding, caulking and painting. They saw a presentation by a doctor who worked at Charity Hospital through the storm; went to local homes to replace old light bulbs with energy-efficient ones; visited a charter school; and worked at a community garden and restaurant where local youth train for culinary careers. A visit to the French Quarter completed the week.
