LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Bucknell University Environmental Center will hold a grand re-opening of the BUEC sustainable backyard on Friday, April 27, from 4 to 6 p.m.
The Arbor Day event, which is free and open to the public, will include a welcome message at 4 p.m. by Cathy Curran Myers, interim executive director of the BUEC.
Immediately after the welcome, students will give demonstrations and informal tours highlighting the many sustainable practices on the BUEC property. Divisions of native plants from the BUEC garden will be given away to attendees on a first-come, first-served basis.
In the back yard, attendees will find information about the native plant garden and the new pathway as well as tours of the solar array that helps to power the Center, rain barrels for stormwater collection, a compost bin, and organic raised-bed gardens.
In the front yard, there will be information about the native woodland plantings and the new walkway that reuses flagstones from one of the fraternities that has moved. The walkway also provides for stormwater management with a gravel foundation that retains water from rain and snow below the surface so that it can gradually infiltrate the soil.
The Bucknell University Environmental Center is located at the southern end of campus, near the Observatory.
