LEWISBURG, Pa. — Afro-Cuban band Tiempo Libre will perform in concert Friday, Feb. 3, at 8 p.m. in the Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University.

A three-time Grammy-nominated young Latin band, Tiempo Libre is celebrated for its incendiary, joyful performances of timba, an irresistible mix of high-voltage Latin jazz and seductive rhythms.

Tiempo Libre is musical director Jorge Gomez, keyboard; Raúl Rodríguez, trumpet; Leandro Gonzalez, congas; Tebelio "Tony" Fonte, bass; Armando "Pututi" Arce, drums; Joaquin "El Kid" Diaz, lead vocal; and Luis Beltran Castillo, saxophone and flute.

"The orchestra's modern take on Afro-Cuban roots blended with Latin jazz is second to none," according to The Miami New Times.

Prior to the performance, the band will discuss Afro-Cuban jazz and African influences during a reception hosted by the Weis Center at noon on Feb. 3. In addition, the audience is invited to attend a reception with the musicians following the performance. The band's outreach events are hosted in part by Bucknell's Social Science Colloquium series, "Shades of Black and Brown: Afro-Latino/a Interactions."

Tickets are $20; discounts for senior citizens and students are available. Tickets also may be purchased one hour prior to each performance.

Tickets can be charged at www.bucknell.edu/boxoffice or by calling 570-577-1000. Tickets also are available in person from several locations including the Weis Center lobby weekdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the Barnes & Noble at Bucknell University bookstore in Lewisburg weekdays and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, 12:30 to 4 p.m.; and the CAPS Center Box Office, located on the ground floor of the Elaine Langone Center, weekdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The next performance in the Weis Center series is "Body Against Body" on Feb. 11 with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, in an evening of dance that revives the duets and solos that launched Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane onto the early 1980s downtown performance scene. Tickets for the Feb. 11 event are $25 per person.
