Institute for Leadership in Technology & Management

ILTM

Bucknell's Institute for Leadership in Technology and Management (ILTM) was founded in 1993 to offer Bucknell students a unique learning experience that bridges the disciplines of engineering and management.

Consisting of a two-summer sequence of programs, the ILTM brings together in the first summer 20 of the best and most highly motivated rising juniors in engineering and management to engage in an extremely intensive, six-week, on-campus program that focuses on globalization, ethics, communication skills, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership.  The students hear lectures and attend workshops by Bucknell faculty and corporate leaders, travel to selected industrial and business sites, and work with companies on significant and real-world management and technological projects.

In the second summer as rising seniors, students participate in off-campus internships that involve work at the confluence of technology and management and that reinforce the importance of the themes stressed during the first summer in the ILTM.

The internship experience gives a student exposure to the highest level of executive management and decision-making as well as the opportunity to observe and participate in day-to-day problem solving and strategic planning of a firm.  Students who successfully complete both the first and second summers in the ILTM are uniquely poised to become leaders of private or public businesses or institutions that not only stand to profit from the unprecedented technological, information, and environmental changes occurring in the world today but also understand the need to act ethically and responsibly to sustain a healthy balance between man and his technologies and the global environment and economy.

With a leadership gift from Lauren P. Breakiron, Class of 1952, the institute was founded with the aspiration of fostering mutual respect and understanding between the professional disciplines of engineering and management. Being the first university that offers this program at an undergraduate level gives Bucknell a unique competitive advantage in recruiting students.

Bucknell seeks funding from numerous private sources to create a $4.5 million endowment that will generate enough money for 1) an ILTM Faculty Chair, 2) named corporate scholarship support for students, 3) named fellowships for faculty, and 4) a program fund to support curriculum development, institute programming, and expansion of internship placement and alumni networking.
