Blackboard

What is Blackboard?
Blackboard is a course management software package that provides faculty and students with centralized access to online course documents, creating an online "home" for a course.  In addition to providing an electronic repository for course-related documents, Blackboard offers various tools to enhance a course's online presence: discussion board forums, online journals, online quizzes, and a gradebook feature, among other useful tools. Blackboard allows instructors to create and to maintain a course Web site with little or no knowledge of HTML code or Web page editing software.

What Can Blackboard Do for You?
Blackboard allows faculty members to provide easy access to course-related documents of multiple types (and in multiple formats), such as a course syllabus, assignments, electronic readings, discussion questions, PowerPoint files, image files, video clips, audio files, etc.  Blackboard also allows you to provide links to documents that are stored elsewhere on the Web: for example, full-text articles in online journals, external Web sites, online news sources, etc.  Materials in Blackboard are normally available only to students enrolled in the course.

Blackboard can enhance communication between faculty members and students and also among the students in the course.  It allows a faculty member to post course-related announcements for the students to see; it provides a mechanism for the instructor or any member of the class to email the entire class, groups of students, or individual students; and it can facilitate group interaction by providing a group discussion board, document storage space, and a group chat area.  Together, these features make Blackboard a great tool to support student learning and collaborative class projects.

How Do I Find Out More?
If you want to know more about Blackboard, contact us, or point your browser to www.bb.bucknell.edu, and check out your Blackboard course(s).  To log in to Blackboard for the first time, you'll most likely need your eight-letter password that you received in the mail.  If you have problems logging in to Blackboard, you can use the "Forgot your password?" link at the bottom of the login form to change your Blackboard password to whatever you want it to be.  (This will NOT affect your file services or email passwords.)
