Opportunities for Students

There is a social as well as an academic aspect to mathematics at Bucknell. The following clubs and activities offer numerous opportunities to experience mathematics in a variety of ways:

  • Mathematical Association of America student chapter: holds regular meetings and sponsors various events, including student-faculty get-togethers
  • Right Angle: students interested in issues related to teaching mathematics; activities include volunteer and paid tutoring and outreach to the community
  • Putnam Club: meets weekly in the fall semester to practice for the Putnam Competition, a national problem-solving contest for undergraduates held every December
  • Pi Mu Epsilon chapter: honorary mathematics society

Through regularly scheduled talks, students learn more about mathematics, its history, and its appearance in areas as diverse as art and finance.  Mathematicians from both academia and industry share valuable information about mathematical careers, and students gain exposure to the culture of mathematics and mathematicians.

Students have the opportunity to work closely with faculty in the mathematics department on research projects.  Many of these are coordinated through the Bucknell Honors Program, and a list of past honors theses shows the wide range of topics that have been explored.
