Information about the Graduate Program

Bucknell offers a Master's degree in Mathematics. We offer a variety of courses in pure and applied mathematics and statistics. For a complete description of the graduate program, see the online mathematics graduate catalogue. General information about the graduate program at Bucknell and general application requirements can be found at the home page of the Bucknell graduate program.

In the mathematics department, the strongest and most meaningful graduate program will require two years, although an exceptional student with an excellent background can complete the program in a shorter time. It is hoped that all students will enjoy their graduate study; much of the pleasure is found in problems and in friendly dispute over the adequacy of proofs. To some extent, extra-curricular mathematical activities are formalized: every graduate student is expected to attend the public functions of Pi Mu Epsilon and the irregularly scheduled lectures given by local or visiting mathematicians, and upon occasion contribute to the program of the former. It would be hoped that all graduate students would be active members of the Bucknell Chapter of the Mathematical Association of America. But whether formal or informal, organized or spontaneous, life in a mathematical community is a stimulating experience, which no one who really enjoys mathematics should miss.
