And these covered bridges developed a use
Which the architects never had planned,
Although it may sometimes have led to abuse
It still did a lot for the land
The romantic old structures provided a cover
For many a maiden and many a lover.

So few of our twentieth century folk
Ever heard of those earlier days
When love and romance and the joys they invoke
Were fastened in primitive ways.
When love was a potion not easy to take
Because, you see, bridges were quite hard to make.
