Study Abroad

Admitted Students

While you are getting ready to come to Bucknell, we in the Office of International Education urge you to begin planning now to leave Bucknell for one or two semesters of off-campus study during your junior or first semester of your senior year.

Where can I study off campus?

You can study just about anywhere. We send students to approved programs and universities in Europe, Asia, Central and South America, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand. Over 40 percent of each graduating class has spent one or more semesters abroad. We also send students to internship programs in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., as well as the Marine Laboratory at Duke University.

Does Bucknell sponsor its own programs?

Yes, Bucknell offers:

Bucknell also maintains affiliations with the following programs and exchanges.

In addition, Bucknell students may study abroad on a non-Bucknell program. Our office maintains an extensive list of approved programs and universities offering study abroad options.

Which majors allow for off-campus study?

Students in all majors, even pre-med, management and engineering students, can and do study off campus with careful, advance planning.

When can I meet with you?

Normally, the office staff begins meeting with students in group sessions in October of the sophomore year and then in individual meetings to help you pick the right program. But you are welcome to visit the office at any time to browse through our library of approved programs or visit our web site.

What should I be doing now?

There are several things you can do during your first year at Bucknell to prepare for study abroad.

  • Continue or begin language study. If you have at least two years of college level study you can actually take courses with students at their universities in French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish-speaking countries.

  • Tell your academic adviser that you are considering off-campus study and ask how you can meet your degree requirements and still study abroad. You may have to rearrange the sequence of courses.

  • Sign up for courses that will prepare you for living in and understanding another culture. Bucknell offers a wide array of courses with an international focus.

  • Come to the Off-Campus Studies Fair held in the fall and talk to students who have returned from study abroad. Likewise, attend any hall programs that your Resident Assistant may schedule with returnees.

  • Get involved with international and multicultural clubs on campus. It’s a great way to meet students from diverse cultures and to learn about different areas of the world.

  • Attend campus lectures and cultural programs with an international focus.

How much will it cost?

Students going abroad on non-Bucknell programs pay on-campus tuition minus a tuition credit of approximately $1,500. Students pay room and board costs directly to the program provider. Note that these provider costs may be higher than room and board costs on campus. Bucknell pays the program provider tuition costs directly to the provider. Students on Bucknell programs (Barbados, France, Spain and London) pay tuition and room charges to Bucknell. Students on the Kyoto program pay tuition, room and board charges to Bucknell.

Can I study abroad in the summer?

Bucknell runs several summer study abroad programs, including:

Consult the Office of International Education for new faculty-led programs or additional programs. Not all programs are offered every year.

I receive financial aid. Can I still study abroad?

All financial aid, whether federal, state, or institutional, can be applied toward the cost of a semester or full-year of off-campus study (except work study). Financial aid covers the cost of Bucknell tuition first. Any aid beyond Bucknell tuition can be applied to program room and board costs.
