Library and Computing

Admitted Students

Information Services & Resources (ISR) is committed to helping you succeed at Bucknell. ISR supports computing, the library, and telecommunications, and TV on the Bucknell campus.

Computing

Information regarding Bucknell's first-year student laptop program can be found by clicking on the following link: Bison Laptop

Bringing a computer to campus is a good idea. Laptops allow you more flexibility and mobility, so you may want to consider this option. Most locations on campus are now equipped with wireless networking for laptops. ResNet, Bucknell's Residence Hall Network, will allow you to check for online information about coursework and assignments, do research, check e-mail, and access the Internet all from your on-campus room. And, best of all, at Bucknell there is no technology fee.

Twenty labs housing over 445 computers (a mix of Windows, Mac, and Sun/Linux systems) also are available for student use.

Library

The Bertrand Library's collections of research databases, full text journal articles, media resources, and print books and journals make it the information center of the Bucknell campus. The main level houses all the public services the library building offers students. Visit the Information Commons on the first floor of the library for all of your research needs. Staff there can help you find sources for papers, prepare a class presentation, or create a website for your favorite extracurricular student organization. And, of course, the library offers a variety of comfortable study spaces, collaborative learning spaces, computer workstations, and both wired and wireless network connections for laptops.

BU TV

All students have the option to subscribe to BU TV, Bucknell's digital-cable service with more than 60 channels of commercial television programming and an additional seven channels slated for international programming. The wide-ranging channel line-up was selected specifically for Bucknell to balance the entertainment and educational content needs of the campus community. To use BU TV, at least one student in each room must bring a television and purchase a BU TV set-top box kit from the Bookstore as well as a BU TV content subscription. Telecommunications

At least one student in each residence hall room should bring a single-line, touch-tone phone. This phone can be used to place on-campus, local, and long-distance calls, and to access the university's voice mail system. Phone recommendations

Voice mail is available for all students residing in Bucknell-owned buildings. While an answering machine can be connected, it may not function with the university telephone system and isn't recommended.

Students will be provided a PAC (Personal Access Code) to place long-distance calls. There is no monthly fee or setup fee for a PAC. You will only be charged for the calls that are made using the PAC.

Employment

Looking for employment while going to school? ISR employs about 200 students during the academic year in a wide variety of positions. The technology skills you can gain by working in ISR have proven attractive to employers. Online applications are available.
