Campus Diversity
Admitted StudentsBucknell is committed to building an inclusive college community that allows all of its members to live in a bias-free environment. At the same time, we have to educate all students for productive citizenship in a diverse world. Creating a strong sense of community is not achieved without conflict. At Bucknell, we are committed to fostering a community that allows for the safe and successful exchange of thoughts and ideas through programming designed to engage students in constructive dialogue.
Multicultural Student Services
The Multicultural Student Services (MSS) strives to develop multicultural and international perspectives through educational, social, and cultural programming. The office provides counseling to individual students and assists in their adjustment to the Bucknell community and supports student organizations on issues related to diversity. MSS promotes and incorporates an appreciation for the multicultural nature of our society into every aspect of campus life. Activities are designed to create a campus climate that welcomes diversity, breaks down divisions, and decreases intolerance and stereotyping. Through programming that supports academic excellence and stimulates positive social and cultural interaction, the office works to foster a community – and ultimately a nation – in which the reality of cultural diversity is recognized and celebrated. If interested in learning more about Multicultural Student Services, please contact Jessica Quintana-Hess at (570) 577-1095 or jah018@bucknell.edu. Women's Resource Center
The Women's Resource Center at Bucknell provides an opportunity for women and men to learn and grow together, particularly concerning campus, local, and global women's issues. The center presents educational programs to various groups across campus, including fraternities, sororities, residence halls, and athletic teams. The WRC Advisory Board, consisting of students, faculty and staff on campus, aids in shaping the array of programs and services offered. The Women's Resource Center is a place of advocacy, support, and safety for all members of the Bucknell University campus community. In order to promote Bucknell's mission that its students develop into productive citizens with a sense of justice and carrying the qualities of self-awareness and compassion, and in line with Bucknell's commitment to diversity, the Women's Resource Center actively engages in a feminist model of empowerment to 1) promote women's rights and self-determination 2) redress inequities, both historic and contemporary, based on sex, gender identity and expression, and sexual orientation, and 3) celebrate the achievements and highlight the struggles of women the world over. International Student Services
International Student Services (ISS) provides programs and services to support international students in their lives both inside and outside the classroom. The office serves foreign nationals, dual citizens, permanent residents, and U.S. overseas students as they adjust to life at Bucknell, learn more about U.S culture, and share their home cultures with the Bucknell community. In addition, we welcome U.S. citizens to get involved with our programs and events. International Student Orientation is held prior to New Student Orientation and is designed to address social and cultural adjustment as well as practical matters like immigration, banking, employment, and health insurance. The program is well established and is a wonderful way to meet other new and returning students, settle in on campus before classes begin, and have fun. ISS is sensitive to the needs of international students with significant experience in the U.S. as well as those who are new to this country. We look forward to welcoming you to the Class of 2012 and getting to know you throughout your four years at Bucknell. Office of Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender Awareness
The Office of LGBT Awareness provides programs and annual events designed to promote the academic and personal growth of LGBT persons and their allies, to assure unrestricted access to, and full involvement in, all aspects of the life of the university. The office serves as a catalyst for the creation of a campus environment free from prejudice, bigotry, harassment, and violence. The office also provides counseling to students seeking information regarding issues of sexual orientation. The Office is home to the student group FLAG&BT (Friends of Lesbians and Gays, Bisexuals, Transgenders). FLAG&BT is an active Bucknell Student Government organization which promotes support of LGBT individuals and allies as well as planning various social events. There is a student lounge area for weekly meetings and other gatherings of students in the Office of LGBT Awareness. The lounge is home to a LGBT library of books, magazines, and videos. The office sponsors annual events like National Coming Out Day, National Freedom to Marry Day, Jeans Day, and Day of Silence. The office is a member of the National Consortium of Directors of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resources in Higher Education.
