Deborah A. Abowitz received her Ph.D. in sociology and demography from Brown University and is currently an associate professor of sociology. An award-winning teacher and former academic dean, she has previously published research on income inequality, political participation, and the feminization of poverty along with articles and reviews in past issues of Teaching Sociology. Her current work focuses on social expectations and cultural constructions of marriage and wedding ritual among American college students.
