Rationale -- Principles

CLA Document

The principles that we have come to identify as most characteristic of this proposal might best be described in terms of two words: trust and confidence. Ultimately we base this proposal on the abilities, dedication, and resilience of faculty members, students, staff, and the outside community that both supports and critiques Bucknell; on the inherent value of diversity of all kinds for the challenges it offers through the multiple perspectives it continually presents us with; on the creative flexibility of the traditions that have guided Bucknell in the past and continue to do so; on the need for a special effort at this point in Bucknell's history. Our belief in these principles has led us both to recommend progress toward a distribution system by means of divisional conversations and to reject the idea of requiring that courses receive formal approval for meeting the characteristics devised for the distribution program.
